Shillong: Activities of rebel groups in Meghalaya are being monitored by the government which will ensure that these outfits are tackled, Governor R.S. Mooshahary said Thursday at the start of the assembly’s budget session.
He said the government stood committed to providing good governance.
“My government is committed to providing good governance and an administration which is clean, responsive, accountable and target oriented,” he said, addressing a sitting of the 60-member legislative assembly at the start of the budget session.
Stressing the need to strive for an accelerated growth path for the state, Mooshahary said the growth should be inclusive to ensure that the benefits reach all sections of society, especially the poor and the weak.
In order to accelerate economic growth, he said the state government proposed to the Planning Commission a plan size of Rs.2,727 crore for 2011-12.
Highlighting the plans and programmes of the government, the governor said that the priority of the government would include a thrust on livelihood security.
“The government will also lay special emphasis on the strengthening of value chains in the rural sector for promotion of horticulture, sericulture products and fisheries, among others,” Mooshahary added.
To improve the education quality in the state, three international schools were being established in the three districts, he said.
He said the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme will be upgraded for the implementation of the right to education by 2012.
On the health sector, Mooshahary said concerted efforts will be taken to operationalise new hospitals and primary health centres.
“The process of setting up a medical college under PPP (public-private partnership) mode in Shillong and Tura has been initiated. These projects would commence within 2011-12,” he said.
To tackle the problem of illegal influx of foreign nationals, a comprehensive action plan will be drawn up, he said.
The governor added that the government was committed to complete the fencing of India-Bangladesh border, while addressing the genuine problems of people living in these areas.
