Mexico City : Nearly 4.5 tonnes of marijuana have been seized in northwestern Mexico, the navy has said.
However, no arrests were made during the operation in Sonora state. The narcotics were being transported in three speedboats, but the crew onboard the three vessels managed to get away, officials said.
The drugs were detected during a surveillance operation in which ships, air units and marine infantry participated, they said.
Navy personnel spotted the three speedboats travelling at high speed and chased them, but later found the vessels abandoned on a beach.
An inspection turned up 424 bales of marijuana that weighed 4,469 kg, the navy said.
