Ready to deal with any trouble, says Kashmir police chief

By IANS,

Jammu : The Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary forces are confident of successfully tackling without causing collateral damage separatists’ plans to stir trouble during the summer, a senior official said Friday.

“We will ensure that nothing goes wrong this year and people go by their normal life without any trouble,” Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda told reporters to queries on the situation in the Kashmir Valley and the apprehension of a violent summer this year as well.

As part of their strategy, police have equipped themselves with non-lethal weapons and training to deal with any situation of stone throwing. The new weapons include guns firing pellets that stun, pepper guns and non-lethal grenades that give out smoke and colours to split mobs. At the same time, people-friendly measures would be undertaken to keep the people away from the trouble-makers.

Training courses spread over seven days are being held regularly at Zeewan police complex outside Srinagar for both police personnel and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) troopers deployed on law and order duties.

According to a senior official supervising training programme, the seven days’ mock drill is conducted to train security forces in the use of non-lethal weapons to control the riotous mobs.

Violent protests rocked the Kashmir Valley last summer, claiming 110 lives. Stone-pelting mobs took to streets for weeks, paralysing normal life in the region.
