Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley Saturday demanded that the central government take concrete steps against stud farm owner Hasan Ali Khan, accused of stashing nearly $8 billion abroad, and said the case was “not free from doubt”.
“There is something more than meets the eye. The issue is not free from doubt. How can it happen that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) doesn’t have any proof (against Khan) and the Income Tax (department) is claiming a huge tax liability,” said Jaitley while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party programme here.
A Mumbai sessions court Friday granted conditional bail to Khan, saying the ED had failed to establish any case against him and criticised the agency for lack of preparedness.
“We want the government to come out with something concrete and definite on this issue. Serious questions have already been raised in the public fora,” said Jaitley.
Khan is said to have stashed away $8 billion (Rs.36,000 crore) abroad and is allegedly India’s biggest tax defaulter.
