Agartala : The Tripura government will attach the properties of those who remain absconding for years together after committing crimes, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar announced here Monday.
“More than 3,720 people have disappeared after committing various types of crimes. Of them, 1,240 have remained fugitive for more than 10 years,” Sarkar told the state assembly.
Responding to a demand of opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath (Congress), Sarkar said the cases of absconding offenders are being looked into by an inspector general of police-rank officer.
“As Tripura is a border state, sometimes people take shelter in Bangladesh after committing a crime in the northeastern state,” Sarkar stated.
Tripura shares 856 km border with Bangladesh and large portions of the international boundaries are unfenced and porous.
Nath also demanded that an “anti mafia cell” be set up to deal with the “mafia” involved in the illegal land and property related business.
Sarkar, who also holds the home portfolio, said that Tripura Police earlier this year launched ‘Prayaas’, a multi-pronged community policing scheme to reach out to the people, root out crime against women and flush out terrorism besides maintain general law and order.
“Police would go to people to know and resolve their problems, not the other way round. Prayaas would involve local people, prominent and influential citizens, clubs, NGOs and elected public representatives to deal with all types of crimes in the state,” he said.
