New Delhi : A group of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs from Karnataka and Maharashtra Wednesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to allow controlled export of sugar, onion and cotton for the benefit of farmers.
Talking to reporters after the group met the prime minister, BJP leader Gopinath P. Munde said Singh assured the members that a group of ministers will look into the matter.
“We met the prime minister and told him that the sugarcane farmers are not getting right price for their crops. We have requested him to lift the ban on sugar export and allow controlled export of sugar for at least 10 lakh metric tonnes,” Munde said.
He said the members also urged the prime minister to lift the bans from export of cotton and onions.
“The prime minister has assured us that the issue will be taken up by a GoM (group of ministers) and necessary steps will be taken,” Munde said.
