Guwahati: The ruling Congress is contesting the Assam Assembly elections 2011 alone. The party has released the list of all 126 candidates. Out of 126, there are 27 Muslim candidates, that is about 21%. The party is facing strong fight from Assam United Democratic Front of MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal.
AUDF has so far released the list of 66 candidates, of which 46 are Muslims. It is said that, like the Lok Sabha election 2009, AUDF could give Congress a nightmare as the five-year-old party can cause defeat to the Grand Old Party of India on several seats.
As on many seats both AUDF and Congress have fielded Muslim candidates, the split of minority votes is set to happen, brightening the victory prospect of third candidate – of BJP or Asom Gana Parishad.
