8,000 fined for Holi traffic violations

New Delhi: Delhi Police said Monday that it fined nearly 8,000 people for breaking traffic rules and collected Rs.7.88 lakh in fine during Holi that claimed five lives in road accidents.

One person each was killed in road accidents in Bhalswa Dairy, Mongolpuri, Dabri, Neb Sarai and Punjabi Bagh Sunday. In 2010, 15 people died in road accidents during Holi.

Joint Commissioner of Police Satyendra Garg said a total of 7,956 motorists were fined for traffic violations.

A total of 624 were booked for drunken driving, 154 for dangerous driving and 1,702 for jumping red light.

The maximum of 2,686 people were fined for riding two-wheelers without wearing helmet. “We also impounded 305 vehicles,” said Garg.

The fatal accidents took place between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
