Washington : Men occupy an overwhelming majority of executive positions in the global media business, says a report that analysed over 500 firms in 60 countries.
The study by Washington-based International Women’s Media Foundation said 73 percent of the top executive posts in media companies were held by men.
In addition, almost two-thirds of reporters were men.
“The industry is dominated by men at all levels,” said Liza Gross, the foundation’s executive director and former managing editor of the Miami Herald.
She said there was still no gender equity in the global journalism industry.
“Equity in representation on the boards of directors does not exist, and equity on salaries for equal work and equal experience, or equality of access or representation in leadership posts or a critical mass of female journalists in a news bureau,” she said.
The study, which covered around 170,000 people, said that in Asia and Oceania just 13 percent of media executive posts were filled by women.
