Khan’s custodial remand to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) ended Thursday.

Khan was produced before Principal Sessions Judge S.S. Joshi, who remanded him in judicial custody after ED’s counsel, Ujjwal Nikam, submitted that they did not need Khan’s custody for the time being.

Nikam, however, reserved the right to press for Khan’s custody at a later date.

The court decided to address the issue at a later date and sent Khan to judicial custody of 14 days, till April 8.

Although it has not yet been revealed as to which jail Khan will be sent to, the court directed jail authorities to take measures regarding threat to Khan’s life.

“There is a threat to my client’s life. I submitted the same to the court and the court has instructed the jail authorities to take appropriate measures regarding the same,” I.P. Bagaria, Khan’s lawyer, said.

“The court has also allowed home-cooked food and medicines to be given to Khan,” he added.

Khan’s close associate, Kolkata-based businessman Kashinath Tapuriah, was also arrested by ED Thursday.

The sessions court remanded Tapuriah to ED’s custody till March 30.

Among other things, Khan is suspected to have stashed away around $8 billion in Swiss bank accounts, transferring cash and assets out of the country through dubious means and evading tax on income with a suspected liability of over Rs.40,000 crore.
