4,280 candidates in Tamil Nadu as nominations close

Chennai: A total of 4, 280 nominations were filed for the April 13 elections to the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, election officials said Saturday.

As many as 1,879 nominations were filed Saturday, the last date, state’s chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar said in a statement.

The maximum number of candidates (152) are Tirupur North assembly constituency, out of which 145 are Independents.

Around 200 people including owners and workers in of dyeing units in the area had decided to contest elections from the seat in an attempt to draw attention to the plight of around 72,000 employees of the units closed by a Madras High Court order two months back.

Information about the constituency with the minimum number of candidates was not available.

A total of 387 candidates have filed nominations for the 16 constituencies in Chennai city and district.

Chief Minister and DMK chief M.Karunanidhi is contesting the Tiruvarur seat, while AIADMK chief J.Jayalalithaa has filed her nomination from the Srirangam constituency.

Nominations will be scrutinised March 28 and the last date for withdrawals in March 30.

A total of 54,016 polling booths will be set up, the statement said. Tamil Nadu’s total electorate comprises 4.59 crore people.
