New Delhi : India is home to 1,706 tigers, says the latest tiger census released Monday. Here are some salient points related to the exercise undertaken in three phases from December 2009 to 2010.
· 476,000 forest personnel were involved in data collection
· 800 camera traps used for census
· 10,500 sq km area camera trapped
· 615 individual tigers camera trapped
· Rs.9.1 crore spent on tiger census
· Over 27,300 mandays of researchers
· 625,000 km distance covered in 19 tiger states
Local communities along with civil society organisations were involved in data collection and analysis.
Along with tigers, co-predators, prey, and habitat quality assessed.
Genetic analysis was also conducted to estimate tiger populations from faecal samples.
