London : At least 12,000 Libyan opposition activists have been “taken away” to prisons and military camps in Tripoli alone, Libya’s Interim Transitional National Council (ITNC) said in London Tuesday.
Most of them were young men, but also women had disappeared as the forces of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi exercised a reign of “terror, fear and kidnapping” in the capital, said Council coordinator Guma El-Gamaty.
El Gamaty said the ITNC had no desire for revenge. “We are not going to hang people in the street, but plan to establish law and order,” said El-Gamaty.
At present the Libyan people were “facing slaughter” from the forces of Gaddafi, including “slaughter from the sea” from gunboats.
