Limca recognises Indian athletes in new edition

New Delh : The Limca Book of Records Tuesday launched its 22nd edition featuring the achievements of athletes who did India proud by winning medals in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games last year.

The book recognises 15 athletes as ‘People of the Year’ for 2011. It also has 20 refreshing and informative chapters, celebrating over 10,000 achievements out of which 6,000 are new records.

The athletes present on the ocassion were boxers Vijender Singh and Suranjoy Singh, wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Alka Tomar, badminton player Jwala Gutta, weightlifter Renu Bala Chanu, runners Ashwini Akkunji and Preeja Sreedharan, discus thrower Krishna Poonia and rower Bajrang Lal Takhar. Sports minister Ajay Maken was also part of the evening.

“I would like to congratulate Limca Book of Records for completing 22 glorious years. My compliments to them for acknowledging and awarding the performances of the
sportspersons,” said Maken.

These athletes are the true ‘People of the Year’ and they have made us proud as a nation. India’s performance in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games 2010 was at its best since the Games’ inception, with 38 Gold medals in CWG and a record 14 Gold medals in the Asian Games. These achievers have won laurels for the country. Truly there is a sense of accomplishment when we think of their achievements in both the mega sporting events. It is my pleasure to felicitate the sports stars for their outstanding performances in the arena of sports,” he said.
