A decision to this effect was taken after an on-the-spot review carried out by Additional Director General of Police K.L. Meena Thursday.

According to Varanasi Deputy Inspector General of Police Lalji Shukla, “Five watch-towers will be erected around the temple complex and 20 close-circuit televisions will be installed at strategic points in and around the premises as a part of the exercise.”

The ancient Varanasi temple has been on the terrorist hit list, particularly after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in December 1992. Since then, security of the entire area has been upgraded several times.

The temple shares a wall with the 17th century Gyanvapi mosque, built by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
