New Delhi : Rajya Sabha member and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, named a co-accused in the 2G spectrum case, will appear before a CBI special court here Friday.
Sharad Kumar, managing director of Kalaignar TV – predominantly owned by Kanimozhi – and Karim Morani, managing director of Mumbai-based Cineyug Films, the other co-accused in the case, will also appear in the court.
All have been accused of financial improprieties under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
In an apparent step to display DMK support to the 43-year-old MP, her step-brother and union Minister M.K. Alagiri and several party MPs have reached the capital.
On the family front, Kanimozhi’s step-mother Dayaalu Ammal, husband Arvindam and nine-year-old son Aditya are also here with her in New Delhi.
Karunandhi, 82, was “persuaded not to accompany because of his health”, Kanimozhi told reporters.
The CBI court had summoned the three to appear before it on May 6.
The first charge sheet filed April 2 named former communications minister Andimuthu Raja, former telecom secreatry Siddharth Behura, Raja’s private Secretary R.K. Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa, director of Mumbai-based DB Realty Vinod Goenka, managing director of Unitech Sanjay Chandra and three senior officials of the Anil Ambani Reliance group.
The CBI filed the second charge sheet April 25 which named Kanimozhi, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa, Sharad Kumar, Karim Morani and Kusegaon director Rajiv Aggarwal.
Meanwhile, Kanimozhi told a TV Channel that she is prepared for “the worst”.
“If that is what the legal system wants… we have to face everything legally… we cannot run away. We have to respect the court… we have to face it… I can’t keep running away… We have to face whatever the courts decide and I don’t want to speculate… let’s wait and see what happens tomorrow,” said Kanimozhi, who is a former a journalist too.
Security has been tightened in the Patiala House district court complex with more police personnel.
Special CBI Judge O.P. Saini, who is hearing the 2G spectrum cases, said all the accused will be permitted to bring one relative and maximum two lawyers only alongwith them inside the court premises.
He added that relatives of the accused would not be allowed to stand near the courtroom too.
Police sources said that media could be restrained from entering the courtroom during the hearing of the high-profile case.
