Gao, Okuno top seeds at Asian Junior tennis in Chennai

Chennai : The Asian Closed Junior (under-18) tennis championships will be held here from May 16 to 21 with Xin Gao of China (Boys) and Ayaka Okuno of Japan (Girls) as the top seeds.

Besides India, the event has attracted participation of players from the Philippines, Japan, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand and Kuwait, according to Tamil Nadu Tennis Association president Alagappan who briefed media here Tuesday.

Karti P Chidambaram, Vice President, TNTA, said: “Most importantly, conduct of such international events in India will give Indian players a home advantage and enable them to work their way up and establish their credentials in international tennis.”

The singles draws in both the categories are of 64 players with qualifying rounds held over the weekend preceding the event.

The seedings are:

Boys – Xai Gao (CHN) 1, Arjun Khade (IND) 2, Rakshay Thakkar (IND) 3, Vinod Gowda (IND) 4, Saurabh Singh (IND) 5, Siu-Fai Kelvin Lam (HKG) 6, Wisnu Adi Nugroho (INA) 7, Ronit Singh Bisht (IND) 8, Nattan Benjasupawan (THA) 9, Siyu Liu (CHN) 10.

Girls – Ayaka Okuno (JPN) 1, Rishika Sunkara (IND) 2, Aldila Sutjiadi (INA) 3, Prarthana G Thombare (IND) 4, Natasha Palha (IND) 5, Anna Clarice Patrimonio (PHI) 6, Ratnika Batra (IND) 7, Katherine Ip (IND) 8, Kanika Vaidya (IND) 9, Ching-Wen Hsu (TPE) 10.
