Jodhpur : Love, often credited for making the world go round, made a girl here do what most of us would find unthinkable. On hearing that her would-be husband had met with an accident hours before their wedding, she rushed to the hospital where he was admitted, garland in hand, and married the bed-ridden man on the spot, in the presence of startled patients.
Ajay Kumar and Neelam Kumari, both in their mid-20s, were set to tie the knot here Wednesday evening. Ajay hails from nearby Pali district, while Neelam lives in Bhadvasia area of Jodhpur, some 340 km from state capital Jaipur.
“Hours before the marriage was to take place, Ajay met with an accident while on his way to Jodhpur. He sustained serious injuries on his legs and hands and had to be admitted to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital in Jodhpur,” Neelam’s father Shravan Kumar Naval told IANS.
The girl’s family broke the tragic news to her, and told her that postponing the marriage was inevitable.
“We told Neelam about it, but she did not agree. She said what if Ajay could not come to her, she would go wherever he was and marry him as planned,” an astonished father said.
Wiping away her tears, she rushed to the hospital Thursday, with a priest and her family members in tow, and headed straight for the patients’ ward where Ajay was admitted.
“I performed all the rituals as a father. Everyone started weeping, even the patients. It was a wonderful marriage,” Shravan said.
“It’s unbelievable that such things can happen in real life, and not just in reel life. I have never seen something like that. It was a wonderful experience for me,” said Avinash Sharma, a patient in the same ward.
Ajay is pursuing a bachelor of pharmacy degree from a college in Udaipur. Doctors said he will be discharged in a few days.
