Prakash Karat to continue as CPI-M chief

By IANS,

New Delhi: Prakash Karat will continue to be the general secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) despite the defeat of the Left Front in West Bengal and Kerala assembly polls, party sources said here Friday.

“There is no question of a change in leadership. The CPI-M is a cadre-based party where the leaders and workers share their responsibilities both in good times and bad times. It is not like the Congress to find a scapegoat for defeat,” a party leader said.

He said the politburo of the CPI-M will meet here Monday “to analyse the election results, not to find excuses or to name a scapegoat”.

Karat’s general secretaryship is to end this year when he completes three years, he added.

Karat was first elected general secretary of the party at the CPI-M’s 17th congress in New Delhi in April 2005.

He was re-elected for another three years at the 18th congress in Coimbatore in March 2008.
