The mass killing, in which most of the 25 men and two women victims were beheaded, occurred at a farm in the town of Caserio La Bomba near the Mexican border, said police spokesperson Donald Gonzalez.

The massacre’s exact time and motive were not immediately known, he said.

Police suspected the slaying could be related to Saturday’s death of Haroldo Lara Leon, brother of late Guatemalan drug lord Juan Jose “Juancho” Leon who was killed in 2008.

Guatemala has long been haunted by violent crimes, most of which were drug-related.

In November 2008, 20 people were killed at a village near the border with Mexico.
