Kolkata: While 59 Muslim candidates were able to win, 17 other Muslim candidates ended at number 2 in the just concluded assembly election in West Bengal. Abdul Jalil Ahmed of Trinamool Congress lost Cooch Behar Dakshin seat by just 2863 votes. He got 69165 votes while the winner Akshay Thakur of All India Forward Block got 72028 votes.
There were many other Muslim candidates who were defeated by other candidates with less than 5000 votes. Though due to Mamata wave there was not much division of votes, yet because of multiple Muslim candidates on a seat, many were lost to other candidates.
