Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) members met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and submitted a memorandum on the D-voters issue in the state. The memorandum signed by several AIUDF leaders pointed out that ignoring the provision of Representation of People Act 1951, without holding any enquiry and/or scrutiny ‘D’ has been put in random manner against the names of lakhs of Indian citizens and now they are being sent to the Foreigner’s Tribunal.
Information received by AIUDF shows that now the Police are arresting the people and sending them to the ‘Detention Camp’. Under these circumstances these people are deprived of defending their cases before the tribunal and exercising their rights of franchise which is absolutely a violation of Constitutional, Legal and Human Rights, leader wrote in the memorandum.
The memorandum also included disturbing figures about the pending cases in Foreigner’s Tribunal which were accessed by AIUDF using Right to Information Act on 12th May, 2011.
The figures are as follows:
From Foreigner’s Tribunal, Goalpara
a) Total No. of FT cases pending 17,612
b) Total No. of FT cases disposed from July,08 to April ’11 1,411
i) Total No. of FT cases disposed off on contested 1,004
ii) Total No. of F.T. Cases disposed off not I.M. 948
iii) Total No. of F.T. Cases disposed off I.M.:
a. Contested I.M. 56
b. Exparty I.M 363
Total I.M. 419
iv) Total No. of F.T. Cases disposed off on exparty 365
v) Total No. of Cases disposed off death and droped 44
Total No. of Cases disposed off (i+ii+iii+iv+v) 1,411
The AIUDF leaders urged the chief minster to stop referring cases to F.T. in random manner and to stop lifting people from their houses without hearing and giving them chance to defend, which is an utter violation of human rights.
They demanded that the government should take appropriate step to settle the pending cases in F.T.s within a specific time frame and should constitute scrutinizing committee in every Police Station to scrutinize one’s citizenship status before putting ‘D’ or referring their cases to F.T.
The memorandum was signed by AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal and other party leaders including Alhaj Sirajuddin Ajmal, Hafiz Bashir Ahmed, Jenat Mollah, Sherman Ali Ahmed, Maulana Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya and Abdur Rahman Ajmal.
