Heads of Bengal’s cultural and educational institutes put in papers

Kolkata : With the change of guard at the helm of the state, many heads of important cultural and educational institutions in West Bengal put in their papers as the government that had nominated them was no more in power.

Nrinendra Nath Chakrabarty, chairman of Paschimbanga Bangla Akademy said: “Yes I have resigned. I was nominated by the government, which now does not exist. So it was my moral responsibility to give up the post.”

The Akademi popularly known as Bangla Akademi is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in West Bengal.

Asked if he will take up the post if offered by the new government, the celebrated poet replied: “That’s a hypothetical question and I do not want to answer such a question.”

Pabitra Sarkar, vice chairman of the Bangla Akademi, has also resigned on the same ground. Sarkar could not be reached as he was out of country, his wife Moitri Sarkar told IANS: “Yes he has resigned. The government which had appointed him is not in power so morally he felt it was no correct to continue.”

Sanat Chattopadhyay, secretary of the Akademi since its inception in 1986, has also put in his papers.

State Women Commission Chairperson Malini Bhattacharya, who also has decided to give up her post, told IANS: “I haven’t resigned yet though it is in the news. We have decided to resign and when we do that we will issue a public statement in that regard.”

Bhattacharya refused to give the reason for the decision to resign saying: “We will issue a public statement.”
