New venue for Congress convention finalised

By IANS,

Varanasi : The Congress Thursday decided to shift its two-day convention to the Beniyabagh ground here after the marquee at the earlier venue collapsed following thundershowers the night before. Party chief Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to hold a public rally later in the day.

“Now, it has been finalised that the convention will take place at the Beniyabagh ground. Sonia Gandhi will attend the convention and later address the rally,” Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh told reporters here Thursday.

The decision to shift the venue from Nadesar ground to Beniyabagh comes after the marquee at Nadesar collapsed due to the wind and rain Wednesday.

Before participating in the convention, Gandhi will felicitate several freedom fighters at a programme in the state’s Ghazipur district.

Gandhi is expected to reach Beniyabagh Thursday afternoon.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Wednesday inaugurated the convention. Launching a scathing attack on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Rahul Gandhi demanded a judicial enquiry into the violence in Bhatta-Parsaul.

“The Uttar Pradesh government is hell bent on showing that everything is fine in Bhatta-Parsaul. If so, then why is section 144 (banning assemblies and demonstrations) clamped there, why are people in the village fleeing,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“If everything is fair, then why is the state government not ordering a judicial probe into the violence in the village?”

Rahul said that the sub-divisional magistrate of Greater Noida had told him that Maoists have moved into the area, spreading more fear among the villagers.
