New Delhi: Reiterating her stand for action in the raging corruption scandals plaguing the second United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, UPA chief Sonia Gandhi Sunday said the ruling alliance was committed to “transparency, accountability and probity” in governance.
Addressing a function to mark the second anniversary of the UPA-II government here, Gandhi said: “Our (government’s) actions demonstrate determination” to check corruption.
She then had a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), without mentioning it by name, for its inaction regarding the scam-tained state government in Karnataka, saying: “Some of the opposition parties did not share the same standards.”
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues and leaders of the UPA parties were present at the function.
Political circles attribute significance to Gandhi’s declaration against corruption as it come at the end of the second year of the UPA-II, which was tainted by major scams including the 2G spectrum allocation, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) scams, Adarsh housing society and others.
Gandhi also said that three important legislations – the land acquisition bill, the resettlement bill and the Lokpal Bill – will be introduced in the monsoon session of parliament.
