Indian teams forge ahead

Chennai : Indian women’s team of Rita Choksi, Bharati Dey, Yvette Singapuri, Aparna Sai and Prabha Kunder recovered to emerge leaders along with the men’s squad on the second day of the 16th Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East (BFAME) Bridge Championship at Hotel Chola Sheraton here Friday.

The Indian women, who were in third position with 36 Victory Points (VPs) Thursday, outplayed Pakaistan by 19-11 and then drew with Palestine 15-15 for a tally of 82 VPs.

Meanwhile, overnight leader Jordan slipped to the second spot along with Pakistan, both collecting 76 VPs. Palestine were last with 66.

In the men’s section, unfancied Saudi Arabia caused a minor flutter defeating India by 18-12 VPs in the fourth match of the round-robin. The hosts, who were leading with 61 VPs after the third match, however, made up by defeating Jordan 22-6 in the next match.

India, after the fifth and concluding match of the round robin, led the table with 95 VPs, followed by Pakistan (84), Saudi Arabia (72), Bangladesh (65) and Sri Lanka (62) while Jordan slipped to the bottom from second place with 59 VPs.

The Indian men’s team conceded two penalty points for carrying cell phone, though inadvertently, during the play. As strict protocol is being followed in this championship, Chief Tournament Director Ton Kooijman imposed two penalty points during their play against Jordan.
