Congress evades query on Rahul Gandhi’s elevation

By IANS,

New Delhi: The Congress Wednesday evaded a direct reply to a question about reports that party general secretary Rahul Gandhi could be made working president of the party and an announcement could be made on the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi Nov 19.

“This is an internal matter of the party on which there cannot be a public discussion. When party reaches a decision, it will be conveyed to you,” Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters.

Party leaders expressed ignorance about any such move.

Speculation about Rahul Gandhi being given a higher responsibility in the party has been doing the rounds for some months and gained momentum after the surgery of his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi in the US in August.

Sonia Gandhi has since resumed her normal duties in the organisation.

Rahul Gandhi was part of the four-member committee Sonia Gandhi appointed to look after Congress affairs in her absence during treatment in the US.
