Gopalgarh (Bharatpur) : National Commission for Minorities (NCM) advised the Rajasthan government to take steps to “improve the perception of the minorities” towards it. The NCM also instructed the government to sensitise the police and the administration towards minorities in the wake of September 14 violence at Gopalgarh in Bharatpur district which resulted in ten deaths.
“There are lot of misgivings about the government after the Gopalgarh incident. The government is taking action, but I told CM Ashok Gehlot that the public is still not convinced,” said the NCM chairman Wajahat Habibullah.
He added that he had a good meeting with Gehlot and the senior officials and that he was able to raise all the relevant points, including the misgivings and apprehensions conveyed to them by the affected persons.
The team including NCM members K.N. Daruwalla and Syeda Bilgrami Imam, was here to discuss the issue with the authorities and others concerned, including members of the Meo community. A group of Muslim leaders complained to the Commission about the “attitude” of the Governor, citing his response when they had met him on the issue of Gopalgarh riot recently.
The commission members had a two hour long meeting at the Chief Minister’s office attended by Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal, Chief Secretary S. Ahmad among others. Habibullah asked the Govt to strengthen police presence in the vulnerable areas and to establish healthy dialogues between the police and the local people.
NCM also asked the government to make appointments to the State’s Minority Commission and provide more representation to the minority community in the police force.
