New Delhi: Amid speculation that Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi may be appointed party working president in the coming days, party leader Digvijay Singh Friday suggested that the young leader should play a bigger role and “take care of all of us”.
“I feel now he has to look after us all,” Digvijay Singh told reporters on the speculation in the media about Rahul Gandhi’s new appointment.
He said that Rahul Gandhi has to come in the mainstream. The young party leader is looking after Youth Congress and NSUI, the student wing of the party.
Digvijay Singh is party general secretary in-charge of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh where Gandhi is guiding the party effort.
There has been speculation in media that Gandhi could become the party’s working president and that an announcement in this regard could be made Nov 19, former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
When asked about the issue earlier this week, party spokesperson Rashid Alvi had not made a categoric statement. “Internal matters of the party are not discussed with media. If any decision is taken, you will come to know,” he had said.
The talk about Gandhi getting a larger role in the party had gained momentum after the surgery of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in August.
He was also part of the four-member committee appointed by Sonia Gandhi to look after Congress affairs during her treatment in the US.
