As party MPs met the prime minister, Trinamool chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Kolkata to reportedly discuss a financial package for the state.

Addressing reporters after meeting with the prime minister, Trinamool leader Sudip Bandopadhyay said: “The prime minister agreed with our sentiment… He said coordination between the UPA allies needs to be improved.”

The TMC MPs had suggested pulling out of the UPA after the petroleum companies announced Rs.1.80 per litre hike in petrol price on Thursday but were restrained by Banerjee.

The Trinamool chief had said the government should take allies into confidence on such sensitive decisions but did not ask for a rollback of the petrol price hike.

The Trinamool Congress has 18 MPs in the UPA.
