New Delhi : The Congress Wednesday said the Haridwar stampede, in which at least 20 people were killed the day before, occurred due to insufficient arrangements by the Uttarakhand administration.
“Sympathies for the kin of the victims are okay but the accident occurred due to insufficient arrangements. The state government is responsible for it,” said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.
At least 20 people were killed and 40 injured in the stampede that occurred when massive crowds had gathered near the Ganges for a religious meet in the temple town.
Reacting to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s plans to divide the state into four administrative units, the Congress spokesperson said “the government should set up a panel to look into such demands in various parts of the country”.
On the demand for a separate Telangana state, he said the party’s general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh would be able to respond.
Home Minister P. Chidambaram had earlier said that there could be decision on Telangana after Eid, which was celebrated Monday.
