Kingston (Jamaica) : The minister for national security of Jamaica has described the year 2011 as the “safest year” for the police in the small Caribbean nation as there has been no death of a member of the police force in the line of duty.
Dwight Nelson said 2011 was “turning out to be the safest year for law enforcement officials in four decades”.
He said so far this year, there has been no reported death of a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force — the country’s police — in the line of duty.
“It is something that has worked to the extent where we have not had any police die in the line of duty for 2011, making it one of the safest years for police in the last 40 years,” Nelson said.
“The police are out there 24/7 protecting us and too often they do this at the cost of their own lives, and I am really happy that nothing has happened this year, so far,” he said.
