New Delhi : A caretaker of a Delhi government observation home who encouraged the juvenile lodgers to commit thefts and snatchings to make a quick buck was arrested along with his four associates, police said Tuesday.
Rajender Kumar, 40, Farooq, 30, Karan, 18, and Ankit, 19 and a juvenile aged 16 were arrested Monday for involvement in 19 cases of snatching and auto theft.
“Kumar was a caretaker at ‘Sewa Kutir’, an observation home for male beggars in Kingsway Camp where he met Karan and Ankit and encouraged them to commit snatchings and steal vehicles,” a police official said.
“Kumar would dispose of the stolen goods with the help of Farooq. He would keep a major chunk of the cash with him,” added the official.
Ankit and Karan were arrested Monday from Sagarpur in west Delhi. Riding a stolen motorcycle, they tried to outrun policemen patrolling the area but were caught.
“The duo disclosed that they were lodged in the observation home between April to September, 2011 and met Kumar there,” said an official.
According to police, Kumar convinced the duo that crime committed by juveniles are not dealt with harshly and he promised to give them handsome amount of cash in return.
“We conducted raids and arrested the other three accused,” added the official.
