Peace vital for development of Nagaland: Rahul

By IANS,

Dimapur (Nagaland) : Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said peace was necessary to enable Nagaland prosper.

“The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government has been trying hard to maintain peace and development of Nagaland and other parts of the northeast region, but the state governments and people in general have to be watchful about all those activities,” Gandhi said while addressing a public meeting in Nagaland’s commercial city Dimapur, 75 km west of state capital Kohima.

Criticising the Naga People’s Front (NPF)-led government, he said: “It is most unfortunate to learn that the resourceful state has remained backward due to the misrule of the ruling party even as other parts of the country are marching ahead.”

“Although 93 percent of Nagaland’s budget and funds of developmental projects have been provided by the centre, the outcome is not reaching the people due to incompetence and corruption,” he said.

Urging youngsters to join the Youth Congress and National Students Union of India (NSUI), Gandhi said: “The young people are averse to joining politics because of the way politics is done in India today, but the young politicians have to change this system and lead the country.”

Earlier, Gandhi interacted with Nagaland University students at Lumami in Zhunheboto district.

He also addressed leaders and members of Youth Congress and NSUI at Town Hall here.

Gandhi, accompanied by other party leaders, came here Wednesday. He will visit Left-ruled Tripura Thursday.

The two states go to polls in 2013.
