Attempts to create communal tension in Karnataka town after alleged temple desecration

Kolar, (Karnataka): Alleged detection of pieces of meat on the premises of Sri Prasanna Anjaneyaswamy temple at Ammavaripet triggered tension in the Kolar town on Wednesday morning. A bandh was enforced by Hindutva outfits to condemn the incident, creating inconvenience to the public in general and students in particular.

A complaint was lodged by the temple management, demanding stern action against the culprits. As the news spread a large number of Hindutva activists accumulated in different parts of the town, raising slogans and forcing shopkeepers to down their shutters. The police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the Hindu, Muslim groups as the Hindutwa activists took out a motorcycle rally, which resulted in altercations in places such as the Clock Tower area.

Members of Hindutva outfits stormed the office of a private news channel for not telecasting news about the temple desecration incident. Following the disturbances, holiday was declared for schools on Wednesday. Mid-term examinations for I and II PU students were held as scheduled, how ever students were put to inconvenience by the cancellation of bus services.
