Shoes hurled at Varun Gandhi’s cavalcade

Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi had to face the wrath of his party workers, who waved black flags and even hurled shoes at his cavalcade Saturday after he refused to take part in a ceremony organised by a local party leader here, party sources said.

Irked over Gandhi’s refusal, BJP activists initially tried to intercept him in Nawabganj town of the district, some 240 km from Lucknow.

After failing to stop him, the agitated party workers threw shoes and waived black flags at the cavalcade of Gandhi, who represents adjoining Pilibhit constituency.

According to BJP sources, Gandhi was to participate in the inaugral ceremony of the Guru Gobind Singh Park, but refused to attend the function at the last minute.

When contacted, BJP leader Ravindra Singh Rathore, who had organised the function, told IANS: “Yes, Varun Gandhi was to participate in the function…We don’t know what exactly made him to skip the event.”

Rathore however refused to comment when asked whether partymen threw shoes and waived black flags at Gandhi’s cavalcade.

Meanwhile, BJP Bareilly unit president P.L. Lodhi told IANS: “If any party worker is found to be involved in any act of indiscipline, strict action would be taken against him.”
