Probe into memo will be made public: minister

By IANS,

Islamabad : The result of an inquiry into the secret memo to Washington claiming that President Asif Ali Zardari feared a military coup would be made public, said a Pakistani minister.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan Wednesday said the memo issue was a sensitive matter and Husain Haqqani’s resignation as Pakistan’s ambassador to the US would help conduct transparent inquiry.

She told Associated Press of Pakistan that the result of the inquiry would be made public and nothing would be concealed.

Haqqani Tuesday submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. The government moved swiftly and Wednesday appointed former minister Sherry Rehman as the new envoy.

Pakistani businessman Mansoor Ijaz last month alleged that a senior Pakistani diplomat asked for help in getting a message from Zardari to then chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen.

Ijaz alleged that Zardari feared a military takeover following the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in his hideout in Pakistan town of Abbottabad May 2.
