Tehran : The Iranian Majlis passed a bill Sunday to downgrade the country’s diplomatic ties with Britain, a media report said.
The bill requires the foreign ministry to reduce diplomatic ties with London from the level of ambassador to charge d’affaires within two weeks, Xinhua reported.
It called on the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to reduce the economic and trade relations with Britain to the lowest level.
The parliament said that in case the British government stops its “hostile” policies towards Iran, the Iranian government can upgrade its ties with the country.
Last week, Britain severed all business ties with Iranian banks as part of London’s new financial sanctions against Tehran in the wake of a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency that expressed concern over Iran’s controversial nuclear programme.
Iran insists its nuclear activities are “peaceful” and for civilian purposes.
