Islamabad : Students in Pakistan were least interested in reading knowledgeable books and shopkeepers, in order to earn a living, were forced to sell those that were “vulgar, immoral and unethical”, experts said.
Research conducted by the Daily Times showed that booksellers in Rawalpindi and Islamabad sold such books as they were in high demand among students.
A bookseller named Hamid Chugtai said he sells such books and magazines as that was the only source of income for him. He said students demand these books without any hesitation. Therefore, the booksellers had to keep in mind the market demand.
Psychologist Sharif Astori said the young generation was “moving towards wrongdoing”.
Reading immoral books adversely affects the thinking capability as well as the process of personality building, he said.
Tariq Shahid, director of the Pakistan Academy of Letters, said the society was moving towards vulgarity, which could ultimately result in increase in gender issues.
The Pakistan Academy of Letters is an autonomous body under the ministry of education to promote literary activities in the country.
