Moscow : Russia Tuesday unveiled a new radar station capable of monitoring missile launches from the North Atlantic at its west European exclave of Kaliningrad.
President Dmitry Medvedev was present at the inauguration ceremony.
A defence ministry official said the radar will go on combat duty starting Dec 1.
Medvedev had last week said in his address to the nation that he had ordered the launch of the radar as part of Russia’s response to the US’ European missile shield plans.
Russia also plans to deploy Iskander tactical missiles in Kaliningrad in future.
Moscow is seeking written, legally binding guarantees that the missile shield will not be directed against it. Washington, however, has refused to provide those guarantees to Moscow and said it will not alter its missile defence plans.
