Beijing : A total of 96 people have been arrested and fake medicines worth around over $7 million seized in one of the biggest operations in Shanghai against sale and manufacture of fake medicines, officials said.
Shanghai police seized more than 70 kinds of counterfeit drugs, the Shanghai Daily reported Wednesday.
In the crackdown launched last week, police raided at least 59 dens of 27 gangs across the city and confiscated more than 5.5 million fake capsules.
The total value of the medicines has been estimated at more than 49 million yuan (around $7.7 million), said an official with the Economic Crime Investigation Department.
The counterfeit drugs were manufactured in neighbouring Jiangsu and Anhui provinces. Shanghai was like a “transit station” where the pills were repacked, he said.
The gangs also bought out-of-date medicines at low prices from the black market and repacked them.
