The ugly incident took place in the presence of state Congress chief G. Parameshwara and leader of the opposition in the assembly Siddaramaiah.

The groups beat up each other ignoring the pleas of the two party leaders.

Policemen on duty at the venue intervened to separate the warring party workers.

The Congress, which has been faring poorly in all the elections since it lost power in the state in 2004, has been organizing various programmes to revitalize the party machinery.

The meet with voters in Chitradurga, about 200 km from Bangalore, was one such programme.

The trouble started soon after a local Congress leader ended his welcome address.

A group of partymen sprang to their feet shouting why the name of former party Lok Sabha member P. Kodandaramaiah was ignored. Another group tried to shout them down leading to the clash.
