Chandigarh: With just eight days left for Hissar to pick a new MP, the Haryana government Wednesday transferred the district police chief upon directions from the Election Commission.
Hisar Superintendent of Police Vivek Sharma is believed to have been shunted out following last week’s complaint by the main opposition, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).
The complaint says that Sharma was a close relative of Haryana assembly speaker and Congress legislator Kuldeep Sharma.
The Haryana government had to send a list of three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to the Election Commission after the complaint.
Rewari’s Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar Arora has been posted as the new Hisar police chief. Sharma has been posted to Fatehabad.
Mewat Superintendent of Police Yogender Nehra had been given additional charge of Rewari district.
Vivek Sharma, who belongs to the Madhya Pradesh cadre of the IPS, had been brought to Haryana on inter-state deputation.
The Hisar Lok Sabha by-election is scheduled for Oct 13.
The contest is tough for the three main players: Kuldeep Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC), INLD’s Ajay Chautala, son of former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, and three-time former MP Jai Prakash of the Congress.
Stakes are high for all three parties. Hisar is the only seat the Congress could not win of the state’s 10 Lok Sabha seats in 2009.
