Bhopal: The women’s cell of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh Wednesday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government’s campaign on the girl child, slamming Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for failing to check the falling sex ratio.
The campaign, “Beti Bachao Abhiyan”, was launched by the chief minister earlier in the day.
Women’s cell president Archana Jaiswal said in a statement that in Madhya Pradesh, the sex ratio had fallen drastically in recent times and the state topped the list of rape cases.
The state government’s campaign on the girl child was nothing but a gimmick, she said.
According to Census 2011, the state’s sex ratio has come down from 932 girls per 1,000 boys in 2001 to 912 girls per 1,000 boys a decade later.
“According to the National Crime Records Bureau, Madhya Pradesh registered 3,010 cases of rapes last year while 30,000 cases of crimes against women were registered. In 2009, the number of crimes against woman were 27,955 and 2,846 cases of rapes were registered,” she said.
