Beijing : Chinese authorities have detained over 17,000 suspects during the first 45 days of launching a nationwide crackdown on illegal food production, gambling, drug trafficking and other offences.

The suspects were detained as over 36,000 cases were investigated, Xinhua reported.

The campaign was launched Aug 22 to eliminate illegal food producers and vendors, factories producing counterfeit goods and markets built for the disposal of stolen goods, pornography, gambling and drug trafficking.

According to a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Public Security stating the “preliminary progress” of the campaign, at least 7,165 venues used for illegal activity have been shut down so far.

As part of this crackdown, the police also took public help by seeking tip offs from them through phone calls, e-mails and microblog posts.

Over 28,000 tips were received and over 9,200 of them were found to be accurate, the statement added.

The ministry did not specify the ending date of the campaign in its statement, but described it as a “long-term” task.
