Jaipur : Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Sunday paid a surprise visit to Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, where communal violence claimed 10 lives and left about 21 injured last month, party sources said.
Gandhi, accompanied by Union Minister of State of Home Affairs Jitendra Singh, met the families of some of the men who were killed in the violence.
“He visited Gopalgarh where violence had taken place and four nearby villages including Pitholi, Parsoli and Maliga,” a district administration officer told IANS.

The Congress party’s state unit, police and district administration officers were kept out of the loop and were completely unaware of Gandhi’s visit.
“He arrived in Gopalgarh by road through Haryana border around 9 a.m. He remained here for about two hours,” said the officer.
Rantan Singh, MP from Bharatpur Lok Sabha constituency, said that Gandhi’s visit would infuse confidence in the local people, who were living under fear since the violence Sep 14.
People from the Gujjar and Meo communities clashed in Bharatpur district Sep 14 over a piece of land, with one group claiming that it was for a burial centre and the other insisting that it was for a pond.
A team of Central Bureau of Investigation Saturday gathered forensic evidences from Gopalgarh. The state government had ordered a CBI probe into the violence.
