“The commission has issued notice to the concerned authorities and called in for reports in the matter,” an official of the rights panel told IANS.

Sori was admitted to a hospital Monday with head and back injuries. Police claimed that she fell in a bathroom and got injured. She could not be brought before a court in Chhattisgarh.

Sori was arrested from Delhi Oct 4 by a Chhattisgarh Police team and taken to Dantewada for interrogation.

However, rights group People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has alleged that she was tortured by Chhattisgarh Police. The organisation approached NHRC Tuesday and sought its intervention in the matter.

A teacher, Sori, accused of receiving “protection money” from the Essar Group on behalf of the Maoist rebels, was Monday rushed to a hospital in Jagdalpur town, headquarters of Bastar region, after she received injuries on her head and lower back during custody of Dantewada police.
