Dubai : Soaring food prices have significantly contributed to the world’s food insecurity, said Rashid Ahmed bin Fahd, UAE environment and water minister.
The price rise will hamper international efforts to reduce poverty in poor countries, he said in a message on the occasion of the World Food Day Oct 16.
He cited World Bank reports that the food price rise during 2010-2011 pushed 70 million people to acute poverty.
He noted that the UAE depends on importing to meet its food needs, indicating the country is at risk of price fluctuations, though less than other countries.
