In a letter, Idukki MP P.T. Thomas said he was surprised to see news reports Monday claiming that the sarpanch from Ralegan Siddhi, Jaisingh Mapari, has been called for talks with Rahul Gandhi.

“When I visited Ralegan Siddhi in September 2011, the sarpanch and the deputy sarpanch expressed their desire to meet Rahul Gandhi. Accordingly, they sent a letter to me on Sep 10, 2011 requesting to arrange a meeting with Rahul Gandhi,” the letter said.

However, “no meeting has been confirmed with Rahul Gandhi”, he said, adding: “Media reports to the contrary are entirely false and baseless.”

The MP enclosed a Sep 10 letter written by the village headman addressed to Gandhi, but which was sent to Thomas.

Reports in the media quoting the sarpanch said that he and some others would be meeting the Congress general secretary Tuesday. The reports said Gandhi had invited them.
