Polls can’t be won on a single issue: Khurshid

By IANS,

New Delhi : Rejecting the theory that the Congress had lost the Hisar by-election in Haryana due to Team Anna’s campaign against the party, Law Minister Salman Khurshid Tuesday said no poll victory could be attributed to a single person or a single issue.

“It is a bit unfair to reduce democracy to any group or any person… One person or one issue can not make someone win or lose the election,” Khurshid told reporters.

“When BJP was on the rise in Uttar Pradesh, every one said it was the ‘Ram leher’, but that is not true, there were several other factors,” he said. “Same goes for the Hisar by-election.”

Taking a dig at Team Anna, Khurshid said: “If they really wanted to have fun in Hisar, they could have said we are going to have fun in Hisar. Why to say you did not do this, so we will campaign against you.”

The Hisar by-election, the result for which was announced Monday, saw the Congress candidate lose his security deposit. Team Anna had undertaken an anti-corruption campaign in the district before the polls and asked people not to vote for the Congress.

The by-election was won by former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal’s son Kuldeep Bishnoi from the Haryana Janhit Congress. The HJC is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
